Aluminum entrance selection should consider daily traffic, required hardware, thermal performance, accessibility and field conditions

Alumi Door vs. Sunny Lux: Which Aluminum Door Fits Your Project?

Home / 2026 / August

A busy storefront entrance may need panic hardware, an electric strike and a floor closer. The glass door of a contemporary home may place greater importance on a mitered appearance, insulated glazing and perimeter sealing.

These different requirements explain the distinction between PRL Alumi Door and Sunny Lux. Alumi Door offers the flexibility needed for commercial hardware and high-traffic applications. Sunny Lux brings together a slim profile, multipoint locking, insulated glass options and built-in adjustments in a more integrated entrance system.

The choice depends on how the door will be used, which components it must accommodate and how it needs to perform after installation.

Sunny Lux combines fully mitered construction, insulated glass options, perimeter seals and a four-point locking system.

What Are the PRL Alumi Door and Sunny Lux?

Alumi Door is the name for PRL’s commercial aluminum entrance door. It is available in narrow, medium, wide and custom stile configurations, allowing the profile to be selected according to the hardware, traffic and design requirements of the opening.

Depending on the configuration, it can accommodate panic devices, mechanical locks, electric strikes, access-control preparation, pivots, butt hinges and floor or overhead closers. Thermally broken entrance configurations can also coordinate with PRL 250DT center-glazed and 251DT offset-glazed storefront framing.

Sunny Lux is a premium aluminum swing door intended for contemporary residential and high-end commercial entrances. It has a 2 1/8-inch vertical stile, fully mitered construction, a thermally broken frame and options for 1 1/8-inch insulated glass.

The door uses a four-point locking system and additional perimeter seals. It is available in single and double configurations with inswing or outswing operation. Adjustable jambs and hinges provide additional control during installation.

Stile Width Does Not Tell the Whole Story

Sunny Lux is described as a slim-line entrance, but its 2 1/8-inch vertical stile is not technically narrower than the 2-inch Alumi narrow stile.

Its visual distinction comes from the complete assembly. Sunny Lux uses fully mitered construction and a coordinated frame and hardware package, producing an appearance that is better suited to contemporary residential and high-end commercial architecture.

Alumi Door offers more freedom to change the profile. A narrow stile preserves a clean sightline, while medium and wide stiles provide additional room for commercial hardware and more demanding entrance conditions.

Hardware Can Shape the Entire Entrance

Alumi Door can be configured around a wide selection of locks, panic devices, electric strikes, pivots, hinges and closers. This makes it adaptable to egress, access-control and traffic requirements.

For a high-traffic entrance, the stile, bottom rail and closer should be selected together. A floor closer affects the pivot preparation, threshold, bottom rail and installation—not just the way the door closes.

Sunny Lux uses a coordinated four-point locking system. The lock secures the door at several locations and helps maintain consistent contact between the leaf and its perimeter seals.

Smart-lock or electronic access preparation may be available for either product, but compatibility must be confirmed. The lock body, stile clearance, handle, power path and other hardware requirements can affect the final configuration.

Which Door Fits Your Project?

Specific project conditions provide a better basis for selecting a door than appearance or price alone.

A Storefront With Frequent Daily Traffic

Alumi Door is generally the more practical starting point for retail entrances, offices and institutional buildings used continuously throughout the day.

Its style options allow the entrance to be configured for the expected traffic and hardware. Panic devices, electric strikes, access-control components and reinforced closer configurations can be coordinated with the door and surrounding storefront.

A Contemporary Residential Entrance

Sunny Lux is well aligned with homes that use slim windows, large glass openings and modern aluminum systems.

Its mitered construction avoids the conventional appearance of a commercial storefront door. The thermally broken frame, insulated glass options, perimeter seals and multipoint lock also address common requirements for an exterior residential entrance.

A High-End Commercial Space

A boutique, restaurant, showroom or executive office could use either product.

Sunny Lux may be appropriate when the project calls for a refined mitered appearance, insulated glazing and an integrated locking system. Alumi Door may be preferable when the same entrance requires panic hardware, intensive daily use or extensive access-control coordination.

The building type alone does not determine the selection. How the entrance will operate each day is equally important.

Alumi Door supports high-traffic commercial entrances with multiple stile widths and broad hardware compatibility

An Entrance With Accessibility Requirements

PRL specifies a standard 10-inch bottom rail for Alumi Door to support accessibility requirements. Final compliance still depends on the complete entrance configuration, including clearances, opening force, threshold and hardware, as well as the requirements applicable to the project.

Sunny Lux does not use the standard Alumi Door bottom-rail configuration. When accessibility is required, its bottom detail, threshold, hardware and operation should be reviewed before the door is specified.

An Opening That Requires Field Adjustment

Sunny Lux provides up to 1/4 inch of jamb adjustment on each side and up to 1/4 inch of vertical hinge adjustment. A qualified installer can use these features to refine alignment, seal contact and locking engagement when minor field variations are present.

Alumi Door also provides adjustment, but the available movement depends on the selected hardware. Top and bottom pivots, hinges, closers, locks and strikes each have their own adjustment methods and limitations.

In both cases, the opening must be properly prepared. The frame should be installed plumb, level and square, with the necessary clearances and continuous perimeter sealant.

Performance and Options That Must Be Confirmed

Both products can form part of a thermally broken entrance, but thermal performance is determined by the complete assembly.

Relevant factors include:

  • The door and frame configuration.
  • The insulated glass unit and Low-E coating.
  • Spacer and gas-fill selection.
  • Threshold and perimeter seals.
  • Entrance dimensions.
  • Installation and perimeter sealant.

Sunny Lux has published performance results for a tested door configuration, including a U-factor of 0.40 BTU/h·ft²·°F. The figures used as an Alumi Door reference in PRL’s comparison materials come from a thermally broken 251DT storefront-framing specimen.

Because the specimens, dimensions and test conditions are different, these values should not be used to rank the products directly. Any required U-factor, air-infiltration rate, water-pressure rating or structural capacity must be confirmed for the exact assembly proposed for the project.

Impact-Resistant Glass

Both doors may be configured with impact-resistant glass, including applicable PRL Battle glazing options. Availability depends on the glass composition, dimensions, weight, door configuration and hardware.

When a project requires a specific impact rating or certification, the glass and framing must be reviewed as a complete assembly before pricing or ordering.

Smart Locks and Access Control

Alumi Door can accommodate various mechanical and electronic access solutions, depending on the stile and hardware preparation.

Sunny Lux may also support smart-lock or access-control preparation, but these components must coordinate with its four-point locking system. Compatibility should never be assumed based only on the lock manufacturer or door dimensions.

Finish and Color

Finish selection can affect cost, lead time and hardware coordination. Clear or dark bronze anodized finishes may be standard for certain configurations, while powder coat, Kynar, custom colors and different interior and exterior finishes can require additional preparation.

The door, frame and hardware may not use the same finish process. Each component should be confirmed before the order is finalized.

Choosing the Complete Aluminum Entrance

Alumi Door is suited to projects that require commercial hardware flexibility, storefront coordination and configurations for frequent use. Sunny Lux is intended for entrances where a fully mitered appearance, insulated glazing, perimeter seals and a coordinated multipoint locking system are central to the design.

Before selecting either product, the project team should establish:

  • Entrance size, handing and swing direction.
  • Single or double-door configuration.
  • Expected traffic and required hardware.
  • Glass thickness and thermal requirements.
  • Accessibility and weather-exposure conditions.
  • Impact-resistant glazing or access-control requirements.
  • Finish and color.

PRL Glass & Aluminum can then review the door, frame, glass, hardware and finish as one coordinated entrance package. Contact PRL Glass & Aluminum to determine whether Alumi Door or Sunny Lux is the right fit for your next entrance project.
