How to Specify a Residential Aluminum Entry Door

Home / BLOG / How to Specify a Residential Aluminum Entry Door

A quote request for an aluminum entry door needs more than a width, height and color. The manufacturer also needs to understand how the door will open, which glass it will accommodate and what the project requires for installation and performance.

Aluminum entry door specifications should identify the opening, the door configuration and the components included in the request. Recording these details helps architects, contractors and homeowners resolve missing selections and compare quotations based on the same requirements.

Opening, frame and door leaf dimensions describe different parts of an entrance. Label each measurement on the drawings so the manufacturer can review the proposed size and installation requirements

Define the Opening Dimensions and Door Configuration

Start by labeling the dimensions on the drawings. A width and height can refer to different parts of the entrance:

  • Rough opening: the opening in the wall that receives the door assembly.
  • Frame dimensions: the outside dimensions of the assembled frame.
  • Door leaf dimensions: the dimensions of the moving panel.
  • Clear opening: the unobstructed passage available with the door open.

Tell the manufacturer which measurements you are providing and request the required rough opening and installation clearances. A measured wall opening, for example, should not be submitted as the required door leaf size.

For a replacement project, include photographs of the existing entrance and state whether the frame will be removed. For new construction, provide the relevant plans. In either case, identify the wall thickness, finished floor level and proposed threshold condition so the assembly can be coordinated with the surrounding construction.

Specify the configuration, swing direction and hinge side together. Indicate whether the entrance requires a single door or a pair, whether it opens inward or outward, and where the hinges will be located. For paired doors, identify the leaf intended for everyday use and the required clear passage.

A plan or elevation marked “interior” and “exterior” helps avoid misunderstandings about operation. Show nearby walls, steps or other features that could interfere with the door’s movement.

PRL’s Sunny Lux residential aluminum door is available as a single door or pair, with inswing or outswing operation. PRL’s published product information lists a maximum door size of 48 inches wide by 120 inches high and a maximum door weight of 250 pounds.

These figures provide a starting point for reviewing the proposed size with PRL. Confirm their application to the selected configuration and glazing; they do not establish the rough opening or the overall width of a paired assembly.

Specify the Glass, Finish, Hardware and Performance Requirements

Describe the components you want the manufacturer to include and the requirements they must meet. Where a selection remains undecided, explain the intended result so compatible options can be discussed.

Glass. State whether the entrance needs clear views, greater privacy, solar control or a particular exterior appearance. Include the proposed glass makeup when it has already been selected.

Sunny Lux’s published glazing information includes 1 1/8-inch insulated glass units and optional impact-resistant glass. The final selection should identify the compatible glass types, coatings and any laminated components. Overall thickness alone does not describe the glass composition or its performance.

Frame and finish. Provide the desired color and finish reference. If the entrance must coordinate with nearby windows or aluminum systems, include samples or manufacturer references for those products.

When comparing premium aluminum doors, review finish samples and visible profile dimensions alongside the entrance drawings. Sunny Lux has a thermally broken frame and 2 1/8-inch narrow vertical stiles. That measurement describes a particular component; use the system drawings to check the other profiles and how they meet the surrounding construction.

Hardware. Identify handle preferences, the locking arrangement and any additional operating requirements. Sunny Lux includes a four-point locking system. The quotation should state which hardware is included and which requested options require further review.

For paired doors, describe how the secondary leaf will operate and secure. Electronic access or specialized closing hardware can influence whether Alumi Door or Sunny Lux fits the entrance, so address those requirements before selecting the system.

Performance. Provide the project location, entrance orientation and relevant exposure conditions. These details help identify which aluminum door features matter for the local climate and inform the performance targets established by the design team.

Where energy performance is specified, include:

  • U-factor: the rate of heat transfer through the product.
  • Solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC: the fraction of solar radiation admitted through the product as heat.

State whether the values apply to the glass or the complete door assembly. Glass-only data should not be presented as the performance of the entire door. A thermal break reduces conductive heat transfer through aluminum profiles, while the glazing and other assembly components also affect the result.

For air leakage, water penetration, structural loads or impact resistance, provide the project’s specified criteria and request the corresponding documentation. Review the configuration, dimensions, glazing and installation conditions covered by the results. Impact requirements should be evaluated for the complete assembly, including the frame, glass and hardware.

Glass thickness alone does not define the glazing specification. Identify the glass makeup, coatings and required performance, then confirm compatibility with the selected aluminum entry door system

Prepare Your Aluminum Entry Door Specification Checklist

Bring the selections together in a project summary and attach the relevant drawings. The following aluminum door specification checklist can help organize an initial quote request:

Item

Information to provide

Project

Location, new construction or replacement, and quantity of doors.

Dimensions

Width and height, labeled as rough opening, frame, door leaf or required clear opening.

Installation

Wall thickness, finished floor level, threshold details and relevant photographs.

Configuration and operation

Single door or pair, inswing or outswing, hinge side and everyday-use leaf where applicable.

Glass

Proposed makeup, appearance, privacy needs and performance requirements.

Finish

Color, finish reference and coordination with adjacent systems.

Hardware

Handle and locking preferences, plus additional access or operating requirements.

Performance

Specified targets and supporting project documentation.

Pending selections

Items that still need manufacturer review or a design decision.

An initial inquiry can include selections that remain open, provided they are identified clearly. The opening and swing direction may be established while the glass composition still needs review. This allows the manufacturer to distinguish confirmed requirements from options to be discussed.

The Sunny Lux technical documentation provides access to the specification sheet and installation resources. When reviewing the quotation, check that it identifies the proposed configuration, components and any assumptions or exclusions. Resolve outstanding selections before approving the order.
